OPPO had another device up its sleeve last week at the Singapore launch event. Together with the flagship N3, OPPO launched the R5 as well and instead of going for might, the phone is going for beauty; just like the others in the ‘R’ series it precedes.

The R5 shares a lot of similarities in build quality and features with the N3 but the selling point of the device is its girth. The R5 is only 4.85 mm thick and that makes it the world’s thinnest phone at this point of time.

Even with such a slim profile, the R5 is no lightweight when it comes to features. The phone comes with a 5.2” AMOLED display that provides a wider viewing angle with high contrast and brightness. The display is also covered by a Gorilla Glass 3 scratch-resistant panel for added protection. On the inside, the R5 has a reinforced industrial grade aluminium alloy micro-arc frame that is said to have been forged nine times, and then finished by hand to give it that sheen and that polished feel. The slender build of the R5 also made OPPO to rethink the material that was being used. This was a necessary step as it will have to dissipate the heat generated by the processor and to keep the phone running cool. OPPO settled on its own patented phase-shifting material, called Cool Element, which is made out of metal, resin and other composite materials. This material improves thermal efficiency, absorbs heat and still fits into a smaller space.

The Snapdragon 615 powering the R5 is also another important choice as this is a 64-bit capable processor. This means that when OPPO adapts Android 5.0 (Lollipop) for its ColorOS, the R5 will be ready to run in full 64-bit mode.

The R5 comes with the PI (Pure Image) 2.0 engine that allows for better processing of images. With its photo stitching feature, images can be captured with a 50 MP resolution by way of upsampling what was shot by the 13 MP camera. Other notable features include Focus Later, Tracking Focus, Animated GIFs, Audio Photo and Beauty Mode. There’s also the Plus Flash Shot technology that gives the R5 a maximum of 0.18 seconds of focus time so that it doesn’t fail in those not-to-be-missed moments.

Here are the specifications for the R5:

  • Octa-core (1.5 GHz quad-core + 1.0 GHz quad-core, ARM Cortex-A53 processors) Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939) 64-bit CPU and Adreno 405 GPU.
  • Runs ColorOS 2.0.1 (Android 4.4 KitKat).

OPPO has introduced a new way to control music with the optional O-Music Bluetooth accessory. The O-Music is about the size of a 6th-generation iPod Nano and is used to stream music wirelessly from a paired R5 to a set of connected earphones. The reason why this accessory exists is because the R5 is so thin that it can’t have the standard 3.5 mm audio jack built in. OPPO does include a USB-to-3.5 mm Audio Adaptor though in the box so that those who do not want to purchase the O-Music accessory can still listen to music using their own earphones or the one provided. The O-Music can also be used to control the phone to take photos remotely.

The phone also comes with OPPO’s VOOC rapid charging technology and it only takes 30 minutes to get 75% charge from a completely dead state.

OPPO had announced during launch that the R5 will be available right after the event in Australia, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and China. As with the N3, we were not able to find the device in the OPPO Malaysia site. The device has been posted though in OPPO’s Global and on OPPO China sites. On the latter, it comes with a price tag of CN¥ 2,999 (~RM 1,638).
